After her demonstration, many attendees asked David or Kira about the video lights used, and where to get them. Here is some information:
“Kira has used many video lights over the years, and they are a great tool. The first light we used was a Lowell ID-1. I forget where we got ours, but I know it took a while and we had to get a battery-pack made up along with a suitable charger. I now know that Lemac can probably help because they service our battery pack, and also supplied a replacement charger when the first one died. Here are some links I found today for ID-1 units:
Lowel I-light 100 Watt Focusing Light w/ 4pin XLR
Lowel id-light(Dimmer) 100W Focus w/4Pin XLR Plug
Lowel id-light set with 4 pin XLR
You will still need to get a battery pack & charger to suit.
We use these lights on a lightweight tripod; which also allows me as an assistant to reach the light out wide or up high for particular effects. Our battery pack has a shoulder strap; and is quite portable. The tripod also allows me to set it up [say] behind the subject and then get out of the line of shot.
The next light we got, which we demonstrated at the seminar is a small LED unit, sourced from Dragon Image who also supply our lightweight tripods:
LightPro R-3
I notice it has dropped dramatically in price! Not sure why. Perhaps because LED technology is expanding so quickly that brighter units are now available. This small unit is good, but does not push out much light. We attach it to a gorilla pod type tripod so it can be wrapped to a pole, fence, tree or whatever to add that little extra ‘pop’ just where you need it. No cables!
The bigger light we used at Kira’s talk was a Dedolight. Lemac sold this to me when our trusty ID-1 died after many years of service! The dedolight we use is a DLOB4 unit, which plugs straight into our existing battery pack, so it was a no-brainer to buy. It has similar features to the ID-1; that is, you can focus the light plus adjust the brightness. The dedolight comes with filters & barn-doors which is a bonus. Also, like the ID-1 it is small enough to fit on a lightweight tripod and be carried around by an assistant.
I’m not sure if it still available since a Google search did not find much in Australia, but this overseas site still had information:
Dedolight 100W On Board DC Light Head without Cable
Meanwhile, you could contact Lemac:

Hope all of this helps. Happy photographing!”
